Many SEOs (including us) got hit by over optimizing our anchors with 50%+ of the links with just a few keywords. As you probably know, Google sent close to a million emails for suspicious link building, prompting all sorts of panic in our community.
People made re-inclusion requests, a handful tried to remove their links, some businesses closed, while others changed their domain name.
In most cases, all that needed to be done to fix the site was re-balance the anchor profile to a “more natural” distribution.
Make four buckets and put at least 4 or 5 anchors in each bucket…
- 10% primary keywords – Denver brick maker, Denver bricks, Denver builder
- 50% brand keywords – Acme.com, Acme.com, Acme.com, Acme, Acme Bricks, Acme Specialty Bricks
- 20% useless keywords – click here, visit now, check this out
- 20% LSI keywords – brick maker, Denver, how to make bricks, brick specialist
